Same pipes. Same skill. Different paper.
My dad was a plumber for eight years. Long enough to repipe a house faster than guys who'd been at it for twenty. Not long enough to figure out the paperwork.
I remember sitting in his truck between jobs, nine or ten years old, clipboard on my knees. He'd hop out to walk a bid. I'd stay behind trying to make our invoices look like they came from a real company—lining up columns, printing as neatly as I could. I didn't know what half the words meant. I just knew if the paper didn't look right, people might not pay.
He once lost a $4,000 job to a guy whose estimate came on letterhead. My dad's came on a yellow pad. Same pipes. Same skill. Different paper.
I became a flight test engineer—a world where documentation matters as much as hardware. Years later I was talking with two cousins still in the trades, one a general contractor, one a plumber. Different licenses, same story: still losing jobs they could nail because their paperwork didn't look "professional enough."
That's when I started building BillRig.
